History of Forest Lake, MN
The first settlers of Forest Lake came as a result of the construction of the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad. It got its name from the vast supply of timber that dotted its shores. The railroad was finished in 1869. Forest Lake became a township on March 11, 1874. The large demand for summer homes fueled the economy of the city and its surrounding townships. Over the years, a commercial district began to thrive and with it the development of parks, schools and other community facilities. The small lake home village evolved into the city that it is known today when cabin owners began converting their property into year-round houses. A huge growth in population and the local economy was felt through the 70s all the way to the 90s with the township and city being combined into one.
