History of Hugo, MN
The first to settle in Hugo were French Canadians. Early in its day the small settlement established itself as a refueling port for the Northern Pacific Railway. The city is situated in Oneka Township. Prior to being called Hugo, the settlement was originally called Centerville Station. The name Hugo was in honor of Trevanion William Hugo who was a mayor of Duluth. The small settlement was first incorporated in 1906 and became a city only recently in 1972.
