History of Lake Elmo, MN
1852 was the year when the 1st settlement a farm was established on what is now the southwest corner of the intersection of Manning Avenue & 30th Street. The name of the city took it from the nearby Lake Elmo. The city was a part of the Oakdale Township until 1951 when it separated into East Oakdale and Oakdale. By 1972 this small commercial district was incorporated and when East Oakdale Township joined the village it now became the City of Lake Elmo, as we know it today. The early farmers of Lake Elmo were of mostly German and Irish descent. Their specialty was Jersey and Holstein cattle as well a Yorkshire swine. However, the city lost much of its agricultural prowess as more and more residential growth and suburban development followed. The construction of the Lake Elmo Airport in 1952 kept the city on the map. Most of the city is part of the Lake Elmo Regional Park Reserve located on the western shore of the lake.
