History of Mahtomedi, MN

The unique Mahtomedi name came from the Dakota name of the lake- mato, the grey bear and mde, or lake. The small settlement started out in Greenfield Township in 1858. Mahtomedi became a part of the Lincoln Township and was organized out of the western sections. The village of Mahtomedi consisted of mostly summer homes. It was platted in 1883 courtesy of the First Mahtomedi Assembly of he Chautauqua Association. By August of 1931, residents overwhelmingly voted to incorporate into a city. Since then Mahtomedi has successfully annexed other parts of the Lincoln township. By 1972, Mahtomedi and Lincoln officially merged.  Part of the city’s lore was some well-known criminals from the gangster era sought refuge in the city from time to time. Names like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Bugs Moran were rumored to have spent some time to hide out in the city.

4 Seasons Restaurant –This old fashioned diner is a must-go-to place in Mahtomedi with its old-fashioned diner feel; customers get to enjoy a good-old fashioned meal.  The restaurant used to be a drive-in back in the day. The owners have called Mahtomedi home for thirty years and a lot has changed since its early days.  If you are looking for some comfort food, grab some at the 4 Seasons.

Dugout Bar – looking for a place to relax and have some drinks with your friends? The Dugout bar is the place to be. They offer great food, live music and all you could ever wish for in a neighborhood bar.

Betty’s Pies and Eatery – In here you can choose a made from scratch meal. Their menu includes burgers, sandwiches, and salads and let’s not forget their famous pies freshly made and waiting for you.

Mahtomedi Garden Club – for aspiring gardeners and people interested in plants can visit the Mahtomedi Garden Club. The mission of the club is to support gardening for all ages as well as to provide education in schools regarding conservation and horticulture.

Wildwood Artist Series – If you are looking for some friendly family entertainment offered by acts from different part of the globe, take a step inside the Chautauqua Fine Arts Center and look for the Wildwood Artist Series. Since 1990, the venue has hosted a lot of acts including the Vienna Boys Choir and even Celtic singer, Katie McMahon.

Katherine Abbott Park – You have not been to Mahtomedi unless you have seen Katherine Abbott Park, which sits on 76 acres of beautiful trails, tall pines and some lovely ponds. You can enjoy skiing, horseback riding, bird watching or just spend a quiet day eating al fresco with friends and family.
