History of Mahtomedi, MN
The unique Mahtomedi name came from the Dakota name of the lake- mato, the grey bear and mde, or lake. The small settlement started out in Greenfield Township in 1858. Mahtomedi became a part of the Lincoln Township and was organized out of the western sections. The village of Mahtomedi consisted of mostly summer homes. It was platted in 1883 courtesy of the First Mahtomedi Assembly of he Chautauqua Association. By August of 1931, residents overwhelmingly voted to incorporate into a city. Since then Mahtomedi has successfully annexed other parts of the Lincoln township. By 1972, Mahtomedi and Lincoln officially merged. Part of the city’s lore was some well-known criminals from the gangster era sought refuge in the city from time to time. Names like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Bugs Moran were rumored to have spent some time to hide out in the city.
