History of North Oaks, MN
Nestled around Pleasant Lake, the settlement began as a source of water for the Saint Paul municipal water system. In 1883, the area was purchased by James Hill and developed it into a 5,000-acre breeding and hobby farm. The Hill family descendants developed the area into a residential community focused on preserving its natural charm. In order that this goal be maintained, the land was subdivided and then sold with a warranty deed attached placing each home’s property line halfway into the street. This means the residents own all the road in the city. The North Oaks Company owned the rest of the land in the city.
