The first settlers entered a small parcel of land located in what is now the Bayton Township and named it Oak Park. These early settlers saw the potential of the area for industrial development due to its location near the river. By the 1880s, a sawmill and barrel making business was established on the riverfront. The sawmill and warehouse can still be seen today but will soon be moved in order to make way for a bridge.  In 1938 the area was re-platted and renamed Oak Park Heights. Incorporation into a city would not happen until 1959.  The city is home to several excellent paved hiking trails and lots of acres of wooded hills and prairies.
