History of Stillwater, MN
The Dakota and Ojibwa Indians through the intervention of the Federal government signed an agreement that would allow settlers to enter the St. Croix Valley in 1837. Rich in lumber the new township attracted a lot of settlers and has the distinction of being one of Minnesota’s oldest towns even earlier than Minneapolis by a few years. The town of Stillwater was incorporated into cityhood on March the 4th of 1854, coincidentally the same day as the city of St. Paul. The city of Stillwater got its name from the calm waters of the St. Croix River. Popularly known and referred to as the “birthplace of Minnesota” due to the convention that occurred there, which started the process of Minnesota becoming a state, Stillwater is quite popular with tourists who want to experience its rich history and the panoramic St. Croix River valley.
