History of White Bear Lake, MN
At around the time Minnesota State was created in 1858, the first European settlers came to establish the White Bear Township, which consisted of about 38 square miles of territory. It was the land’s beautiful panoramic lakes, fertile ground and abundant game that piqued the interest of the early settlers to live there permanently. When news of the area’s scenic lakes and prairies reached nearby towns, it attracted a lot of visitors, which generated a tourist economy and developed the area as a resort. Folks would ride by steamboat via the Mississippi River or by train in order to visit White Bear Lake. Not long after, hotels, restaurants, shops and stores began dotting the city streets in order to accommodate the needs of visitors. The turn of the century brought with it new industries to White Bear Lake such as farming and lumber while the resort industry waned. Community leaders voted to incorporate in 1921. Further growth and development continued and by the 70s and 80s new parcels of land were acquired via the city’s effort to lengthen roads and utilities for the people. Today 24,000 people call White Bear Lake home.
