It’s not too early to start thinking about your next remodeling project. Home and Garden season is in full swing from the Minneapolis Home and Garden Show to the Parade of Homes, there’s plenty of ways to start getting ideas about your next remodeling project. Whether you’re considering a bathroom redesign, a kitchen renovation or are looking to add a new addition to the home, there are many things to consider. Follow these tips to make the project go as smoothly as possible.

Preparing for your Next Remodeling Project

Choosing to Remodel

It’s important to understand why you’re remodeling. Are you most interested in upgrading your home for your own comfort and convenience or are you looking at a future sale of the home. Aging in place or planning on moving next fall? Whichever it is, you’ll make some choices based on the reason for the remodel. If you’re planning on selling in the next year or two you’ll want to make the home as appealing to any potential buyer. Kitchen and bathroom upgrades are always well received. However, if you’re renovating because you’re planning on aging in place then the upgrades might be less flashing and more practical.

Budget

Set your budget and stick to it. Your remodeler will help you to determine the costs of the project and will guide you through the process so you stay track and on budget. Of course, it’s important to built a little wiggle room into your budget for unforeseen complications – usually 10% is sufficient. Once you’ve decided on a budget and a plan it’s important not to make changes. Changes mid project will increase the cost of the final renovation exponentially, so don’t do it if you can help it. It’s fine to change the color of paint in the bathroom, it’s another thing to change where the soaking tub will be. Make a plan and stick to it, you’ll save yourself money, time and a whole lot of frustration.

Expectations

A remodel or renovation is always exciting in the beginning, but once you start living in a home under construction it can get old fast. Projects take time and something always comes along to disrupt it one way or another. Try to keep your sanity by reminding yourself that we’re all human and we all make mistakes. Of course everyone should strive to meet deadlines, but sometimes things happen. Go with the flow without being a pushover and you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration. If the project is big, it might be a good time to schedule a family vacation to get out of the house and away from the dust, even for just a little while. You’ll come back refreshed and your renovation will have moved forward.
