History of Dellwood, MN

The area around the city first saw a rise in settlers back in the 1850s, mostly from folks moving out from St. Paul.  The population swelled after 1870 with the completion of the Stillwater and St. Paul Railroad.  Most of the homes in Dellwood back in those days were summer homes conveniently located on the White Bear and Stillwater Railroad line.  It is said that F. Scott Fitzgerald spent summers in a Dellwood cottage writing The Great Gatsby and The Beautiful and the Damned.  It was only in 1992 when the village was reorganized as a city. Today, it is popular for the Pine Tree Orchard, which is essentially a three hundred acre farm that grows strawberries, apples, pumpkins and corn.  About 1,800 acres in total, Dellwood is one of the smaller communities located in Washington County. The 2010 census listed only 1,063 residents.

There are 32 high schools and 59 middle schools.  The largest public highs school is Stillwater Area High while the Lake Middle school is the largest public middle school and Liberty Ridge is the largest elementary school in the city.

Due to its small town rural setting most of the city is quiet by sundown but the surrounding area is bustling with activity. Checkout some of the notable places to enjoy near Dellwood.

Rudy’s Red Eye Grill – located near Dellwood this restaurant is known for their superb steaks.  They also offer some great fish and vegetarian dishes for people looking trying to avoid red meat. Check out their Walleye sandwich and onion rings.

Alchemist – Great place to stop for cocktails. The menu rotates depending on the season. Try out the salty caramel lemon drop. It offers a great vibe at night with great music and company.

Eat! @ Banning and 5th – if you are looking for a home cooked delight, this is the place to stop by.
